The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, Sam Robinson

Blog #2

Summary: So in the past couple chapters that I read Cassie's mother has died of a plague called " The Red Tsunami" (Blood Plague or The Fourth Horsemen). This plague killed off almost 100% of the remaining human population. After Cassie's mother dies, her father says that it's time for him, her and her little brother Sammy to leave their home because it just "wasn't safe anymore." They end up finding a refugee camp in the woods and stay there for 2 or more weeks. After about 6 days there, everyone in the camp starts to notice these drones that keep flying overhead of the camp. A few days later a black-hawk helicopter flies overhead and doesn't land, it just flies back away. The next day a bunch of soldiers in Humvee's and trucks pull up to the camp. A few moments later three school buses pull in, confusing and surprising everyone in the camp. The leader of the troops states that only the children would be taken to the "safe camp". Sammy leaves in a school bus leaving Cassie and his father behind. After the buses leave everyone is gathered inside the main building for a meeting. When Cassie states that one person is not there, her and a solider go to the "ash pit" (were bodies of the dead are burned). They find the boy and the solider shoots him. Cassie then shoots the solider. She begins to freak out and run back towards the camp only to witness her father being killed by the leader of the troops. He then see's her and sends to soldiers after her. They lose her and she waits til night to go back to get her rifle out of the tree that she had hid it in. When she goes back the troops set a glowing ball on the ground. It is an explosive. After Cassie runs a very long distance to get away from the bomb, it goes off...

Question #9: What is a specific passage that struck me significantly?
"Something stopped me, though. I didn't head off into the woods. I didn't rush off to embrace the one thing with the best chance to save me: distance. It might have been the teddy bear that did it. When I picked it up, I saw my brother's face pressed against the back window of the bus, heard his little voice inside my head. For when you're scared. But don't leave him. Don't forget."
I find this little paragraph interesting because it just shows you that when something bad happens, and you need someone there for you but they can't be there, you can have something else, like for instance the teddy bear. Well this teddy bear is a stuffed animal that her little brother Sammy gave to her so that way when she gets scared she can hold on tight to the teddy bear and try to make all the bad things go away.

Question #10: What is a problem that the main character solved?
A problem that Cassie solved would have to be would be when she got shot in the leg and she hid underneath a car because she was afraid. After giving herself a pep talk she finally slid out from underneath the car and got up to continue walking to wherever she was walking.
