Monument 14 By: Laybourne

The start of this book is a amazing read. It starts with a average teen getting ready for school. And how much they take there mother for grant it, he is late to the bus stop. At a later time missing he would've missed the bus completely. As an eight grade boy him and his six friends have something terrible happen to them and the rest of the world. Him as well as the other six wish they could go back in time to spend those last moments with there mothers differently. They would make sure those moments were shared with love and feelings.

Question #1: Theme? The theme of this book i think might change a little throughout the book it has a very interesting way of showing the reader certain things. Its theme makes me want to read the novel more and more. Unlike other novels it has a unique way of wording and playing the characters.

Question #2: Characters? Its main character Dean Grieber isa unique character in showing depth in the book. He brings the book together as he goes through this unknown obstacle. He is the only character met so far in the book. As his six friends who go through the exact problems as him are not presented. They seem to not play as a big role as he does. He kinda is the leader of the group.

THE BOMB BY THEODORE TAYLOR

Tyler Harrington

In the beginning the people who lived in the lagoon island  are native people and don't know a lot of things. But they no what planes are.So they saw planes heading towards them and they panicked but they saw that they were American planes and all the islanders got excited to see them. The islanders waved at the pilots and the pilots waved back and one of them through up a peace sign. But then to find out that they are like prisoners because japan soldiers are stationed there and they are very harsh to the people on the island. The main charcter sorry wants to kill the soliders on the island and theres been talk of them doing it but then they dont do it.They don't becuase the soldiers have to send a message or like a beacon to there navel ship on three days or the japanese planes will go check out whats happening.

In this story i admire them because they are strong people trying to be free and live a life with out being under control. But for them right now to be able to be free they have to kill the soldiers on the island.I especially admire sorry because he has lost his mom and his father but he still holds on and has friends to keep him going.Although he does want to kill the soldiers.

For the islanders their actions are  under reason because they want to kill the soldiers on the island and be free again. So its okay if they have to kill bad people who have killed and hurt people in there village.Their actions will be the reason they live or die and its there choice that they are willing to take.

Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, Fiction

Ermin Alemic

The main character of this book is a 16 year old girl by the name of Katniss Everdeen. In this book there are 12 districts that people live in and, in each of those districts two people are chosen or volunteer to compete in The Hunger Games known as the reaping. The Hunger Games is the biggest event throughout these districts and, in this event people compete for a massive amount of gold and they have to fight to the death for it and, Only one district can be crowned winner.
In the book the district which Katniss Everdeen is living in is a very poor district and, she is in district 12. When the two people from each district are picked they pick anyone that is 12 and over. Each district has to have one female and one male compete in the hunger games. If you are 12 years old or older it is mandatory for you to be in the reaping. Katniss's younger sister Primrose just turned 12 and she is qualified and forced to be in the reaping for the 74th hunger games. When they start picking the two people from each district everyone gathers around the speaker and, they choose names randomly. The first name that is picked sends Katniss Everdeen into shock. The first pick of the 74th annual hunger games from district 12 is Primrose Everdeen, Katniss's younger sister. When Primrose is picked Katniss had no other choice but, to volunteer herself to be one of the two people from her district to compete in 74th annual hunger games to save her younger sister. Peeta is a boy from the same district as Katniss and, is a boy who has been crushing on Katniss Everdeen for a while. Since Katniss volunteered to be in the 74th annual hunger games Peeta did aswell to become closer to Katniss. Katniss and Peeta are the two competitors for the 74th annual hunger games from district 12. Will they both get out alive with the prize or, will they both face defeat and die?

Question 6: If you could ask the author a question, what would you ask? If i could ask the author one question about the book so far it would be why did he think of this big event known as the hunger games and, if there was anything that gave him the idea of it from something in real life.

Question 10: Think of one way that a person in the story solved a problem. Tell or write what you learned about solving the problem that you could use sometime in  solving a problem of your own. What kind of trouble was he/she in? What was the problem to be solved? One problem in the story so far was when Katniss's younger sister primrose was chosen to be in the 74th annual hunger games. Primrose was only 12 years old and Katniss couldnt believe that she was picked and she had to do something about it. The only thing that she could possibly do was volunteering and risking her life to save her younger sisters, so that is what she did. One thing that i learned about solving problems in this passage is that sometimes you have to risk your life for someone close to you to save them and, if you know you would have a better job at doing something you should do it.

The Beginning of After by Jennifer Castle, realistic fiction

Laurel is a sixteen year old girl who has spent all of her life pleasing others by being a good daughter, a good person, and a straight A student. She had a good life and a happy family, until her parents and younger brother die in a car accident along with her neighbor Mrs. Kaufman, who leaves behind a son named David who's a year older than Laurel and a husband in a coma. Laurel begins to almost sleep walk through life. Before the accident, David and Laurel were on speaking terms that consisted of awkward "hi's" mumbled through the hallways. Of course they wouldn't be friends before, the designated "bad boy" and the school orientated girl would never in a million years become friends. But after the incident they have something in common, loss. They grieve differently but they always end up attracting each other like magnets. This book is filled sadness and wit, and you might even cry.

Question Answer to #3

This story is a continuous story that follows a direct timeline. It does at a point or two tell a short story of something that Laurel or her family had done in the past as long as it relates to the topic at hand. The view point of view is strictly from Laurel's, making it a first person point of view novel. I think the author chose this point of view so that the reader can truly understand the way the main character feels. This makes it easier for the reader to see what the main character goes through and why she makes the decisions she does.

Question Answer to #4

One of the author's main ideas, I feel, is discovering who you are after drastic change forces you to be someone different. I don't think the author uses symbols throughout the novel to restate the main ideas, but I do think she really locks onto one big event to clearly steer the novel. This big event being the death of her family, which is what enables Laurel to change in the first place.

Looking for Alaska, John Green, FICTION

When a, "un-cool" "not popular"  junior in Florida moved to a boarding school in Alabama called Culver Creek, his whole world changes for him.  Miles went from being a boring child, without many friends, to finding some really close friends he hangs out with a lot. Not many people at the camp go by their real names, Miles roommates nickname is Colonel, who gives him the name Pudge.  The boarding school Pudge attends now is where his father went at a child and was a very good student there, this sets high expectations for him. However these expectations don't matter much when he meets Alaska, who he now smokes and gets kicked out of class with.

Question 3, book structure?
The book "Looking for Alaska" is written sort of like a journal in first person by Pudge. Every dad at the top of the section he says "# days before" and the number changes occasionally skipping some days.  This is an interesting way to write a story because it leaves you thinking and wondering "that number of days" before what?

Question 4, main ideas?
John Green talks about a main topic of smoking a lot in this book. Smoking is not permitted to the students at the boarding school, making it more thrilling to the kids. John also incorporates the title of the book almost threw every page I think. It starts a section with "# days before" and the title is "Looking for Alaska" so i think it is number of days before either something happens to Alaska or she runs away.

Hunger games, Suzanne Collins, Fiction, Nathan Powell

Katniss lives in a district in which there are reaping for the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a battle between all the districts and they fight to the death. Katniss's best friend Gale didn't want them to get pick, so he asked Katniss to run away. Katniss being the smart one says no and ends up going to the reaping. Prim her sister was very scared for the reaping, but what were the odds of her getting pick. Prim was picked for the reaping and Katniss didn't know what to do. For the first time in forever Katniss volunteered to be in the Hunger Games, so her sister could stay a live. A boy and a girl have to be in it and the boy who joined Katniss was Peeta Malark.

1. Katniss right now the main character. She is really brave and helpful for volunteering for her sister. Katniss can inspire many people in real life.

9. The main part of the book so far is the reaping. The reaping was the part were the people are chosen for the Hunger Games which is a nervous thing to be in. First if you get picked you have a chance of dying. Second good people better get picked so your district can win.

When I Was The Greatest By: Jason Reynolds, Fiction

Summary:
In Brooklyn, New York Allen Brooks also known as Ali lives in a rough part of Brooklyn. He meets a new kid named Roland. He moves into the next door of Ali. Ali describes this part that he lives in as the scummy area, because everyone that has lived there has always either trashed the place or moved right back out never to be seen again. They become good friends.

Where in time was this taken and is the setting important...
This book could have been taken at any time period but I would have to say that it was taken around today's time and age, because of the vocabulary that the use in the book. This setting in the book is very important to the story because you, as the reader, need to know that they don't live in the nicest part of  New York.

The book's structure...
This book has a very good flow to it, because it is just like any other good novel, it if formatted with paragraphs and dialogue. The time-line through the story move chronologically through what I have read so far.

Make Lemonade,Virginia Euwer Wolff,Fiction

This novel is about a girl named LaVaughn, who is really concious about her grades and wants to do good in school. But no one in her family has ever gone to college. So she needs to find a job to pay for college, because her mom said she would pay for some of it and then LaVaughn would have to pay for the rest. She finds a job babysitting a seventeen year old teen mom, named Jolly.Who needs someone to babysit her kids so she can get a job.But when her LaVaughn starts getting really involved with the family her grades start slipping and her mom said if her grades go down then she would have to quit her babysitting job.

If i were to ask the author one question about the book I would ask why she picked the storyline of the book. Also what inspired her to write a book about a girl almost "adopting" this family.

The main charcater in this novel is a girl named LaVaughn who is a really hardworking teenager just trying to raise money more college,by getting a job, which in this case is babysitting.

Hannah Fogg; Front and Center; Catherine Gilbert Murdock

In the novel Front and Center, the main characters name is D.J Schwenk. D.J is on her schools girls varsity basketball team, but that was really all she was known for. Other than being a great player, she is not really known well in her school. D.J is trying to make the life changing decision on which college to go to, seeing that she was accepted in many. She doesn't want to let her choices let down her friends, family, coach, and team mates, but she is trying to figure out what she wants to do, but is having a difficult time trying not to go in her families foot steps.

Question One: Do the main characters change by the end of the book? Yes, I think that D.J does change by being able to make her own decisions. In the beginning of the book, she always went to her parents or her brother for their opinion on something before thinking about herself.

Question Two: Is the ending satisfying? Yes, the ending was satisfying because it shows how hard it was for D.J to adapt to making her own decisions without anyone else chiming in to her being confident in herself and making choices that will make her happy in the end.

Mrs.Welch                                                                                                          ELA: Book Blog #1

Mark Watney is on top of the world well on top Mars that is, but now he     has established communications with NASA, he has enough food and water until NASA send him a cache of food from Earth. But due to some technical errors the Hab (Mark's home) was destroyed. Even mark's potato farm (his only way of surviving Mars) was destroyed, Mark also lost communications with NASA. Due to these series of unfortunate events NASA has sped up the proceed to send Mark Watney food to survive that red desolate wasteland. Can Mark Watney rebuild the Hab, can NASA be able to send Mark Watney supplies on Mars, Tune in next time to find out.

Question #6
If I could ask the author one question it would be how was he capable of making a book that makes you feel what the charters are feeling. For instance when they are about to send the rocket into space to send Mark Watney some supplies, the characters felt anxiety, the presser, and stress that was building up to that moment because they didn't know what was going to happen to the rocket and they the anxiety, that stress, the presser was starting to get to me as well.

Question #9
One passage from the story that I found was strange was when he a going for his second harvest of potatoes. The story states "It's almost time for the second harvest. Ayup. I wish I had a straw hat and some suspenders."(page 149, The Martian). The reason why I found this to be a strange passage is because who would say something like that in a crucial/serious situation. That passage will also be memorable because this show how Mark Watney deal with stress and presser.

Shiver takes place in a small town and is about a teen girl named Grace who has a special interest with the wolves in her backyard. Question 1- One of the main characters is a teen girl named Grace who is an ambitious, sweet and loves an adventure and isn't afraid to say what she thinks. She has a father and an artistic mother who love her but are very busy. I really admire her because she isn't afraid to do what is right.

Question 4- This book is mainly about werewolves and a forbidding love between a human and a werewolf that are trying to unlock the secrets of the werewolf world.

Anton Wood The boy murderer, Dick Kreck, non fiction

So far i have read about a boy Anton Wood who murdered a guy for his pocket watch and he is only 11. It shows how the trials went and how they dealt with the problem.

Question #2: What is the central idea discussed in the book. The central idea of the book was what they were going to do with Anton Wood he was too old to set free but too young to hang.

Question 3: Do the issues affect your life. well that is the reason there is a law in place were if you are under 12 you cant go to jail for a crime and if you are under the age of 16 you are considered a minor so it doesn't affect my life directly but that is something that was caused by these issues.

Jeter Unfiltered By:Derek Jeter- Non-Fiction, Cameron Cronk

Derek Jeter is one of the greatest baseball players to ever live. He was born in Pequannock, NJ, and he has now officially retired from baseball. The only team that Derek played for was the New York Yankees. He was very lucky and got to play with baseball players that he grew up watching such as Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs. Not only that but Derek Jeter has his own organization called Turn 2 foundation. This foundation is a charitable foundation that was started by DJ (Derek Jeter) in 1996. What the overall foundation does is to help kids from drug and alcohol addiction. Overall, DJ is an amazing baseball player and also a great man to idolize.

Question 6- If I could ask the author a question what would it be.
My question to DJ would be "How come you chose baseball to play instead of playing any other sport. Also how did it feel to play with two people that you idolized as a kid.

Question 1- Describe the main characters of the book.
The main character DJ is a 41 year old man who has played 20 years of baseball with the New York Yankees organization. You may also know him from a Gatorade commercial in the mid to early 2015 of him and him in public seeing his fans and interacting with them.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jeff Kinney, fiction

Being a kid can really stink. And no one knows this better than Greg Heffley, who finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, author and illustrator Jeff Kinney introduces us to an unlikely "hero." As Greg says in his diary:
"Just don't expect me to be all "dear diary" this and "dear diary" that.
Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he won't do and what he actually does are two very different things.

Question #1: Describe the main characters
Greg Heffley is a rather selfish boy that lives with a dysfunctional family. His older brother, Rodrick is always giving Greg a hard time and whenever Rodrick does something bad, for example he breaks a glass vase, he blames it on Greg, who gets punished. Greg's younger brother Manny is spoiled rotten, Susan and Frank Heffley, the mother and father, are always babying Manny and never ever punish him, because if they do, Manny throws a huge tantrum; this one time when Greg opened the disc slot in his gaming system, he found a giant chocolate chip cookie inside, and of course, it was Manny who had stuffed the cookie into the system, and when Greg told Susan that Manny stuffed a cookie into his gaming system, Susan said:
"Manny is only 3! He doesn't know what he's doing!"

Question #2: Does the main character change at the end?
Yes, Greg changes at the end of the book. In the beginning, Greg had a friend named Rowley Jefferson, who is childish and somewhat short minded, and Greg normally can't stand Rowley, but something about their relationship just "works." Rowley is always visiting Greg's house and whenever he does, all they do is play video games, and at this one point is the book, Greg and Rowley were playing a racing game and Greg tells the reader that the only way to pass Rowley, is to give the vehicle the the player selected some goofy name and when the player passes Rowley's car, he breaks up laughing, which Greg thinks is annoying. But towards the end Greg learns to respect Rowley more and everything turns out okay. That is, until the next book!

"A Matter of Days" by Amber Kizer, fiction~~Alyssa Woodruff

I'll be honest... I am not very far in the book. This book is a survival story between two kids. Nadia, 16, and her younger brother, Rabbit. They attempt to travel across the country from Seattle all the way to West Virginia! The means for their travels are to go visit their grandfather. Nadia's uncle Bean is a in the military. Maybe he is trying to teach his niece and nephew how to survive in the wild? Since I'm not far in the book, I don't know yet, but I am sure to comprehend if so. But anyway, this story is about the trip from Seattle to West Virginia. It explains all of the obstacles that are established within the amount of time it takes to get to the destination.
QUESTIONS:
6.) If you could ask the author one question, what would you ask?
I think I would ask the author why she wrote the book. Does she have an interest in survival stories? Did she experience a situation like this? I don't know and that's why I want to ask. I don't see how someone could be creative just from their mind. I am not creative, therefore I wouldn't know how. I am just curious about the responses I would get from the author
4.) What main ideas....?
The phrase "A matter of days" sounds like something about waiting. Things take time to develop; just like traveling takes time. It takes time to move.

To kill a mockingbird, historical Fiction

The book is about a family with a lawyer for a father in a southern town. The father takes on a case of a black man and because the story takes place back when racism was a huge problem, the town treats the family differently. Jean Louise Finch is an adult telling the story of her past. She starts the book mentioning an injury her brother had gotten when she was six and how it affected him. She also mentions that her ancestor Simon Finch who fled England to escape religious persecution. He started a new life and started a very successful farm known as Finches Landing. The story is great so far. The book is continuous but is told in the prospective of a six year old girl. The author only uses one view point and that is scouts because it brings in the reader, its interesting to read how the little girl reacted to everything.
Questions:
I think Harper Lee wrote the book in the little girls prospective because it draws in to reader, and the girls reactions are unforgettable.
If the book was written in the voice of someone else it would have been completely different because an adult would not have had the same reactions or seen it the way a child would.

The Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins, Science Fiction

Every year, an event happens called 'The Hunger Games.' It's where girls and boys that are twelve through eighteen year old get chosen to fight to the death. Two sisters; Prim and Katniss get ready for the event. It's Prim first year attending this event. As they arrive to the event, they have to go through a line where the workers take a prick of your blood. There are many girls and boys attending the event, so the possibility is slim for Prim to get chosen. Girls on one side, boys on the other. Effie, the host for District 12 speaks, she goes in the girls' bowl first, and the name she calls is 'Primrose Everdeen.' Katniss being the overprotective sister that she is, volunteers as tribute for her sister's place.

Question 1: Katniss is a short, strong and brave teen. She has the ability to fight by doing archery. She stands up for what's right and does whatever it takes to protect her loved ones. I approve of them because there are some people that know something's wrong but don't take any action to stop it.

Question 6:  A question I would ask the author is how would she tell the story if Prim was chosen and Katniss didn't volunteer. What would Prim learn and do? What interest she would look into, etc..

House of Night The Beginning "Marked", by P.C. Cast + Kristin Cast, Fiction, Kat Vincent

I started a new book series called "House Of Night"! I'm reading it out of a combined book of the first two books in the series, so do forgive me if I somehow got the Title wrong. This series is a fictional supernatural adventure thriller type series from my view. The first book, "Marked", starts with our main character called "Zoey" where she was just a normal teenage girl before a "Tracker" marked her. Zoey had become a fledgling, a person going through the change that makes them into an adult Vampyre or a real Vampyre at all. Zoey arrived at the House of Night, a Vampyre school that fledglings gather to while they go through the change, thanks to her grandmother and met the High Priestess of the House of Night, Neferet. Through her adventures of trying to forget her past life as a human, taking down the leader of the snobby Dark Daughters and Sons, and finding the hidden dark secrets within the school, Zoey RedBird is a special fledgling with great destiny and adventure in her path for magical powers to communicating with the Vampyre's worshiped goddess Nyx and maybe even more. This book really gets you a different perspective on Vampyre you may hear about from folk lore or fairy tale's, personally I think this is more amusing than just biting someone or infecting them with vampyre's blood to turn them.

Alright; Questions!

  Question #7:
I guess the book has changed my thoughts a bit on Vampyre's. I would've never thought of there being like apprentice or turning periods for people turning into Vampyre's. It did broaden my perspective on many things about Vampyre's and have given me many ideas from just this one book in the series.

  Question #6:
If I could ask the Author a question (Well, I think Author's) it would probably be; "What was your inspiration for Vampyre's?" It's kind of like a question to know what gave the ideas of Fledglings, rituals, a Vampyre school, and the Mysteries around them.

Ellis friend commits suicide and he tries to figure out why. This book is a good book that i think you should try reading sometime.

Question 6- If i could ask the author one question i would ask her how she came up with the idea to write this book. What gave her the idea of this book.

Question 2- Yes the characters change by the end of the book. They become more mature and they all have different feelings for each other.

Jolly i a 17 year old mother struggling to get enough money to take care of her kids. Finally LaVaughn's mother cares so much for her daughter and is only interested in that Lavaughn stays on the right path so she can make a good life for herself.

Question #4 "What main ideas does the author explore..."
I think that the main idea is perseverance. I think his because no matter what has occurred in the story so far good or bad the characters are determined to succeed. For example when Jolly is fired from her job she is determined to find a new job and try to get her life on track.
In the masters now, tiger has a rough first few holes. He let his emotions get the best of him as he threw a club after a bad shot. Last Summer by Holly Chamberlin Fiction

Summary- In the town, Yorktide in Maine is the best place to raise a family. Another reason why it's the best place is that Jane Patterson's best friend live next door and their two daughters are the closest. Rosie is Jane's daughter and she is about to start her freshman year with her best friend. Since birth both Rosie and Meg have never been apart. Especially since Meg lives next door there is no reason for them to be apart.

Question One- If I could ask a question to the author i would ask "Why did you make the mother so over protective to Rosie since she was very quiet and shy?" After reading this book it made me want to read her other books. I like the way she writes her books and they are modern scenarios that are likely to happen.

Question Two- The story is taken place in modern time. The book was written in 2012 so the plot was probably fitted to that point in time. If the time and history was changed the whole plot would be different. Rosie would probably been bullied in a different way or not as much.

6) If you could ask the author one question, what would you ask? Have you read books by the same author?
If i had to ask the author one question i would ask what inspired you to write this book? Was there someone with the same problem?

8) Where in time and history did the story take place? Is the setting imperative to the story? If changed, how would the story be impacted?
This story was taken place in a small town and this girl wants to go to college but her parents dont have the money to go and so she has to make the money in order to go. So she finds a babysitting job and gets the money that way. If the setting was changed i dont think it was change the story because its focusing on Lavaughns career and how she wants to live.

Jacob Buell- The contract by Derek Jeter with Paul Mantell. Realistic fiction

This book so far is about baseball superstar Derek Jeter when he was just a little boy. He was one of the hardest working kids in his class along with on the baseball field. One day his teacher gives his class an assignment to write about what they want to be when they are older. Jeter obviously knew what he was writing about, a mlb baseball player. But once he started to write he realized he had nothing to back it up. All he knew was wht his goal was. This put things in perspective for Jeter. He now knew he had to create goals to get where he wants to go.

Q1. Derek Jeter is one of the most hard working kids around. He always gets his work done befor playing games outside. He is also very encouraging, since he helped his friend become a better baseball player.
Q6. If I could ask the author any question, I would ask " Are you thankful for how your parents made you work harder in school?"

Divergent, Veronica Roth, fiction

Divergent is about a distopian society where society is split up into five factions based on personality. Theres Erudite, Amnity,Abnigation, Candor, and Dauntless. Beatrice Prior is of abnigation decent, but now has the ability to choose her own faction. If she stays with Abnigation, she will live her own life how it is, but based on her personality, she must choose which one best fits. Erudites value intelligence, Amnity values kindness and nature, Abnigation values selflessness, Candor values honesty,And Dauntless values fearlessness. Since Beatrice is 16, she must take an aptitude test to see which one best fits. She is very nervous because if she gets other than abnigation, she may have t choose to leave her family. if she chooses a faction that doesnt actually fit, she will be forced to be factionless, and live on the streets.

Question 1-describe the main character: Beatrice is a sixteen year old girl, who doesn't think she may belong in abnigation. Shes very confused on who she really is.

Question 3-book structure: the book is from beatrices point of view, and i like how it explains whats going on in good detail
