Jacob Buell. "The Contract" by Derek Jeter.
At this point in the book, young Derek is looking up to many of his favorite baseball players. He is really starting to learn what it takes to be one of the greatest to play by watching his idol Dave Winfield. He finds out that Winfield started his own charity fund for young children. Derek knows that he wants to do that when he eventually makes it to the big leagues.
